Well,
They've done it
now!
On June 26th,
The Department
of Commerce, at
ICANN's
request,
entered a
duplicate
dot-BIZ TLD (a
collider) into
the USG
root.
This was done
on behalf of
Neulevel.
As a result,
this website
and possible
email addresses
will also
collide.
What does that
mean to you and
me?
It means
duplicate
domain names!
It means that
if you send
email to a .biz
domain, it may
not reach the
person you are
sending it to
OR you may
receive email
that is not
meant for you.
Think about
that...
It also means
that if you
"type"
an address into
your browser,
you may not see
the website you
are trying to
reach.
Until ICANN/DoC
introduced this
collider into
the most viewed
root in the
DNS, there was
no discernable
problem.
Pre-existing
conflicts were
on the way to
resolution
after years of
diligent
work. If
you attempted
to reach a
website that
was not
understood by
your browser,
you simply got
an error.
If you sent
email to a .biz
domain and a
system did not
understand that
address, the
email would
bounce, but it
would not go to
someone else
instead.
Now, what's
next?
Will you be
told what you
can see on the
Internet by
ICANN?
Will you be
told what
traffic can
pass through
your computer
or your
network?
Will your ISP
be forced by
ICANN or the
government to
restrict your
access?
Will you lose
more freedoms
-
privacy,
speech, free
market,
choice?
Things are
certainly
moving in that
direction.
ICANN has now
set a precedent
that it is okay
to introduce
colliders and
has made
statements that
it could and
most likely
would do so
again.
ICANN board
members have
also made
statements
where they
place the blame
on those
businesses that
existed prior
to
theirs.
This behavior
is rather like
the abuser
blaming the
victim for the
victim's injury
- "See
what you made
me do?"
Really!
If this blatant
duplication of
an existing TLD
bothers you, or
if the
precedent that
encourages
further
collisions
disturbs you,
or if it is NOT
okay for ICANN
or the
government to
take a business
product away
from an
existing
business and
use it for
themselves, please
make yourself
heard!.

Watch
for expansion
plans!
For those of
you who fear
losing your
domain names,
that is not
true.
While ICANN is
endeavoring to
open a
duplicate
registry for
another .BIZ,
it does not
affect the
"original"
dot BIZ TLD
Registry.
We
have expansion
plans on the
table and will
inform all of
you as soon as
they are
implemented -
soon. So,
stay tuned for
future
announcements!
ICANN
has posted a
draft of the
registry
agreement for
new TLDs.
Although this
agreement has
nothing to do
with us
(AtlanticRoot

there will be a
public comments
period where we
can all
post. In
addition to the
obvious
restraint of
trade issues
inherent in the
agreement with
those who will
contract with
ICANN, there is
also a mandate
that all
registries must
comply with the
UDRP.
Most of the
appendixes have
NOT been posted
as yet, which
means there
will be little
or no time for
comment on
them.
We
urge our
supporters to
post their
opinions and
support for the
Inclusive Name

BIZ tm
in particular.

IN CYBERSPACE:

Dear Mr.
Roberts:
The
Committee on
Energy and
Commerce is
continuing its
oversight of
the Internet
Corporation for
Assigned Names
and Numbers
(ICANN). As you
may recall, the
Subcommittee on
Oversight and
Investigations
of the
Committee on
Commerce held a
hearing on July
22, 1999, to
examine the
issue of domain
name system
privatization.
In
connection with
our continuing
review, we have
been monitoring
the process by
which ICANN
arrived at its
decision in
November to
approve seven
suffixes:
.aero, .coop,
.info, .museum,
.name, .pro,
and .biz. There
have been a
number of
reports that
ICANN's process
to create a new
generation of
Internet domain
name suffixes
may be
thwarting
competition in
the
registration
and assignment
of Internet
domain names.
As the
Committee of
jurisdiction
over this
issue, the
Committee wants
to ensure that
this process is
open and fair,
and most
important,
successfully
sparks
competition. To
that end, we
are gathering
facts in
preparation for
a Subcommittee
on
Telecommunications
hearing in
February to
examine the
process by
which ICANN
selects
Internet domain
name suffixes.
Accordingly, we
request that
you contact
Chairman
Tauzin's
telecommunications
counsel,
Jessica
Wallace, to
arrange a time
to jointly
brief committee
staff at your
earliest
convenience.
Sincerely,
